About

Our
Story.

How a small café at Yppenplatz became the most colourful living room in Vienna's 16th district – with a love for organic, for people, and for Mexican joie de vivre.

01 · Beginning

Inspired by Frida Kahlo.

Frida Kahlo was an artist, a rebel and a woman who lived life in its most intense colours. This is exactly the feeling we wanted to bring to Yppenplatz.

Café Frida is a meeting spot for people who appreciate good coffee, honest food and a bit of warmth. Here you'll find a mix of Mexican soul, Viennese cosiness and a pinch of art.

Every espresso, every burger, every table tells a little story – and you're invited to write your own into it.

By the way: some people write us Frieda, some write Frida, on Google you'll also find "Cafe Frieda Vienna" or "Kaffee Frida" – it's always us, Café Frida at Yppenplatz, Payergasse 12. Named after Frida Kahlo, so with an i and without an e.

"Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?"

— Frida Kahlo

We love organic. Out of conviction.

BIOS Certified

We are a BIO-certified and audited hospitality business (AT-BIO-401). That means: regular inspections, honest standards, no greenwashing.

Höllerschmid

Our organic meat comes from Höllerschmid. All eggs and meat products are organic – with the exception of pastrami, because we don't want to compromise on quality.

NÖM Fresh Ambassador

We are official NÖM fresh ambassadors. Milk, yoghurt and cheese come from Lower Austria – short distances, honest farmers, top quality.

The Owner

Onur Eyer.

Behind Café Frida stands Onur Eyer – restaurateur by passion, Viennese through and through, a Yppenplatz local for many years.

Onur didn't design Café Frida on a drawing board. He built it piece by piece out of what he himself was missing in Vienna: a place where good food, honest ingredients and real hospitality aren't marketing promises but the everyday reality of the business. Not a concept somebody planned on a whiteboard, but an attitude you can feel with every espresso, every breakfast and every after-work spritzer.

If you walk in in the morning, he's usually behind the bar himself. He knows the regulars by first name, knows which neighbour always orders his breakfast without onion and who from the area has just returned from holiday. He talks to suppliers personally, checks the goods himself, decides what goes on the menu and what comes off – not by trends, but by what tastes good and what fits Frida.

It matters to him that the café isn't just a business, but part of the Grätzl (the neighbourhood). That's why he buys locally, works with organic farms in Lower Austria, supports neighbourhood initiatives and lets local musicians play on Sunday afternoons when it fits. Frida should taste as little as possible of "concept" – and as much as possible of what you'd want to have in a friend's living room in Vienna, if that friend really knew how to cook.

"I don't care how a café looks on Instagram. What I care about is whether you say on your way out: I'm coming back here."

02 · Attitude

Stay offline. Stay present.

We have WiFi – but laptops don't work here. Instead: a book, a conversation, a good coffee.

We believe the best moments happen when the smartphone stays in the pocket. When you really listen to the person across the table. When you taste the pastrami on your tongue instead of photographing it.

Café Frida is a place for real encounters. Come by, breathe, be fully present.

03 · Place

Right at Yppenplatz.

Yppenplatz is one of Vienna's most vibrant squares. Right by Brunnenmarkt, the multicultural heart of Ottakring.

Farmers from the countryside sell fruit and vegetables here, Turkish spots smell of fresh börek, in summer the square turns into one giant terrace. Café Frida is right in the middle of it – and part of it.

Here the regular sits next to the tourist, the artist next to the family, the shift worker next to the student. Exactly as it should be.

Come by.

We'd love to see you – at Yppenplatz, right in the heart of Vienna.
